I liked the idea of the kid’s fave dinosaur peeking out of the water, looking like the clusters on Cannon Beach. They had a saying that they were tight like peas and carrots so the Spinosaurus’ skin pattern became a representations the veggies. 🦖🐠🌋

Here I wanted the wings of the new house to be an extension of the family so they were seen as one. The architecture also mirrors the pose of the characters. I made the smiles big and white to parallel the white brick. 🤓👗👟🍼🍽🏠🗝🎵🌤

It was interesting designing this piece because of the closeup intimate nature of the composition. There were a lot of details that needed to be seen and set apart from whatever was around it. This meant they needed to contrast somehow, so placement was key.

I knew when my client said she liked Farmers Markets there was a fantastic opportunity for a plethora of color and liveliness. I never know how to approach twilight/dawn palettes because I'm always afraid it's going to overpower the main subjects. That's probably silly because I see a lot of my favorite illustrators doing it effortlessly, but I realize it's their hard work that makes it look effortless. Perhaps I'm not as versed in it yet. I left clouds out with a purple/pink gradient and just let all the fruits, veggies and deets speak. Go Yanks. ⚾️

This piece marks a departure from something I did for a while for the reason of focusing on a strength; the life in my drawings. My line work had always carried a casual energy that proved to connect with other people (and me). So I would draw in pencil, then outline in ink. What I have found is that the ink actually disrupted my ability to see tonal nuances. Thus, I am moving forward with the idea of painting directly over my pencil drawing, which I now do with a drafting pencil for intense detail. In college I went through stages of having my professors fuss at me for different reasons. First it was to break out of only doing pieces in black and white, then it was to break the cycle of only working in tone and no line work. They wanted me to stretch myself so I’d have options later. I still work myself into corners and am still pretty stubborn about getting out of them. But I suppose in the end all that matters is that I’m on the path to strengthening the work.

The art called for many subjects and a beach scene, so, logically… I decided to leave the sky white 1) because of the amount of detail the subjects called for, and any new subtleties going on in the sky would battle it 2) the white makes the subjects pop even more, and they are the main attraction.
