Sarah Maxwell’s Illustrations Focus On Feminine Mystique

Comic artist and illustrator Sarah Maxwell took to art at an early age. “I always knew I wanted to work as an illustrator, but it wasn’t until I started creating more authentic personal work and posting on my social media accounts that I gained an audience,” she shared with Communication Arts.

Now she makes sure to share her progress on her Instagram page, where she has amassed quite a following. Known for her pastel-hued illustrations, GIFs, and comics, her work is inspired by anime aesthetic from the ’90s and early ’00s.

“I try to take on work that has a story that I can relate to—especially if it has a spark and is really moving. It’s great to be the one to bring that story to life. These pieces are the ones I can look back on and be proud of,” she explained.

According to her website, the best way to describe her work is summed up in four keywords: “nostalgia, tenderness, femininity, and 80’s electronic music.”
