Graphic Designer Creates Awesome Wood Carvings

From Monday to Friday, Wales-native Giles Newman is a successful graphic designer, but on the weekends, he likes to step away from the computer screen and dedicate his time to his true passion; wood carving.

Newman started experimenting with wood carving a few years ago and first made cool wooden spoons with highly detailed handles in the shapes of animals and flowers. Later on, the artist started making figurines and wood necklaces, which ended up becoming really popular on social media.

In order to find the best material for these pieces, Newman frequently goes on walks through North Wales’ spectacular woods where he collects fallen branches and sticks, which will be later turned into works of art.

Check out some of his works below.

The Lotus Flower spoon that I carved in early 2017 and which sold in April of that year. I remember my astonishment when I recognised the name of the buyer, Norman D. Stevens as the author of 'A Gathering of Spoons', a book that I had bought a few months earlier. His writings and collection of unique, hand carved spoons, not only creatively spurred me on but did so much to reassure me that I wasn't alone in my passion for carving spoons that value both beauty and utility. To have one of my creations join his incredible collection was and always will be truly an honour. It is with great sadness today I learned that Norman passed away this last weekend. Though I never had the opportunity to meet him in person and only talked with him a few times by email, his inspiration and the impact he had on my woodcarving is something I will forever be indebted to him for.

The Oak Barn Owl, Mushrooms and Winter Solstice spoons. . Time can seem like a fairly abstract concept when you spend so much of it outdoors. It seems even more abstract to realise that between them, these three spoons have taken over 1,500 hours to carve… . Someone once commented that to spend so much time carving spoons like mine, I must be “either rich with too much time to waste or stupid”. Since I’m anything but rich (money being another somewhat abstract concept to me), I guess I must be the other! But then happiness is difficult to put into monetary terms. . . . #christmas #yule #woodcarving #woodart #handmade #handcarved #art #artist #spoon #spooncarving #nature #craft #maker #makersmovement #inspiredbynature #craftsposure #imadethis #calledtobecreative #postitfortheaesthetic #creativehappylife #beautifulthings

The finished Poppies pendant. . Carved entirely by knife from the wind fallen branch of a 400 year old English Oak tree. It measures 7cm in height. . I’ve always adored poppies. Their fragile, gently folded, tissue paper like petals make them a truly beautiful subject for woodcarving. With this piece I wanted the petals to have a sculptural quality but with movement, as though rippling in a breeze. Each flower is different from the others, their appearance based on dozens of reference photos that I took earlier this year. . Available to buy at GilesNewman.com . . #poppies #poppy #wildflower #flora #woodcarving #woodart #handmade #handcarved #art #artist #nature #craft #maker #makersmovement #inspiredbynature #craftsposure #imadethis #calledtobecreative #postitfortheaesthetic #creativehappylife #beautifulthings

The finished Star Anise pendant (well done everyone that guessed it!). It’s strange how flowers are almost universally admired for their aesthetic beauty but fruits and seeds far less so. Some plants however, in facing the challenge of sowing their seeds, use nature’s engineering ingenuity to create fruits whose beauty can rival any flower. Can you think of any other fruits or seeds whose beauty could be celebrated in a carving? The finished pendant measures 35mm (1.38in) in diameter and will be available to buy along with a few of my other recent pieces at gilesnewman.com in a couple of weeks time… delayed slightly as I need it for a magazine shoot next week! . . . #woodcarving #woodart #handmade #handcarved #art #artist #nature #maker #countryliving #makersmovement #inspiredbynature #craftsposure #imadethis #calledtobecreative #postitfortheaesthetic #creativehappylife #beautifulthings

I’ve finally got round to doing a (long overdue) shop update and overhaul. Quite a few of my more recent pieces are now available and I’ve taken a bit of time to reshoot and update a few of the other carvings that were already up there. So all of the pieces pictured here are at long last available on my website at gilesnewman.com (link in my bio!)…… and yes, my posts are much like buses; you wait ages for one and then two come along at the same time! I hope you can forgive my uncharacteristic multi-post behaviour (and the gratuitous sales pitch! 😳) . . . #woodart #woodcraft #woodcarving #art #artist #handcarved #handmade #carving #handcarvedspoon #folk #folkart #countryliving #countrylife #nature #naturelovers #spooncarving #maker #craft #woodcarver #jewellery #jewelry #boho

Letting the wood design the carving… this butterfly pendant is carved from an Elm burl. I designed the butterflies to use the knots in the wood as the markings on their wings. The final picture is a shot of the piece of Elm that inspired the carving. . If you enjoy my work, please consider supporting me on Patreon.
