Painter Finds Inspiration in the California Sun

Artist Mary Finlayson draws inspiration from the natural beauty and colors of California. Influenced by artists like David Hockney, Matisse, and Stuart Davis, her paintings are colorful and striking.

With a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Queen’s University, a Graduate Degree in Art Therapy from the Vancouver Art Therapy Institute as well an Arts Education Degree from the University of British Columbia, Finlayson primarily works with acrylic and gouache.

Originally from Vancouver, B.C., Finlayson is now based in San Francisco, where she formed her brand Painted Mary. “Painted Mary is a reflection of myself and my interests,” she told Rare Device Blog. “I’m not sure it’s a brand, but rather an expression of my art and experiences,” she went on to explain.

“I really can’t remember a time in my life when I wasn’t interested in painting,” she said. “My mom always kept a huge drawer in the kitchen full of art supplies so after school I would entertain myself at the table drawing and painting until it was time for dinner.”
