Couple Creates an Instagram Account to Promote Wheelchair Disability

Kam who is a designer and illustrator on wheels and her husband, a concept artist for the video game industry, created an Instagram profile where they share adorable illustrations of people with disabilities.

“My husband and I thought it would be fun to draw chibi-inspired portrayals of the disabled community WE know; fun-loving big dreamers who live life to the fullest, whether that’s through sports, skydiving, skateboarding, traveling, rock climbing, race car driving, surfing or spirited wheelies living out their dreams,” Kam shared with Bored Panda.

With their project called Chair Devils, the duo wants to increase the awareness that being disabled is ‘normal,’ even though it can’t be found in the media or culture.

“Chair or not, I believe in living life to the fullest! I travel, have skydived, parasailed, skied and scuba dove the Great Barrier Reef. Disability does not mean void of capability, I’m just different and different is good. A chair doesn’t mean we can’t and don’t live it up. We are every bit as “normal” as the “able” bodied world. We dream big and we live big.”

Welcome!! We are a husband and ♿️ wife artist and design duo. I am an industrial designer and illustrator who happens to be in a wheelchair. . . I have a rare and progressive muscle disorder. Prognosis is quadriplegia. For 12 years I’ve been a public advocate for my disease and disability. A few years ago I began including writing and art into my advocacy. My art is primarily inspired by the progression of my rare disease and moments often associated with disability. (My art: Kamredlawsk.com) . . My husband and I love toys, design and film and believe, in the inclusive era, there needs to be more disability representation in pop culture. More visibility means more understanding for the LARGEST and FASTEST growing minority group in the US and worldwide. . Using our background in art and (toy) design we want to represent the disabled community WE know in a light-hearted fun and inclusive manner through adventurous chibi inspired characters who live their life to the fullest, whether that’s sports, skydiving, skateboarding, traveling, rock climbing, race car driving, surfing or spirited wheelies living out their dreams. . While my advocacy style is fairly honest about the struggles sometimes associated with a progressive disability, I don’t want disability viewed through a sad lens. The greater message is we are all different and differences are good. Disability does not mean void of capability. A chair doesn’t mean we can’t and don’t live it up. We are every bit as “normal” as the “able” bodied world. We dream big and live big. . Chair or not, I believe in living life to the fullest! I travel, have skydived, parasailed and scuba dived the Great Barrier Reef. Live your best life, I’m living mine. Follow us as we share all the characters we’ve been working on. . . Please feel free share our little pet project 😉. #chairdevils @kamredlawsk @jason_hazelroth
