The Simplicity of Jin Kitamura’s Crayon Drawings Makes Them Strangely Captivating

A lot of people judge an artwork based on its complexity, the grand ideas behind it, or how realistic it looks. However, art doesn’t have to be complicated or polished to be interesting, and the works of Japanese illustrator Jin Kitamura are a perfect example of that.

Kitamura creates simplistic crayon drawings that focus on everyday sights and the most basic things. His subjects, which range from animals and flowers to clothes and furniture, are shown in a minimalistic fashion. They feature just a few colors and simple shapes and see the subject dominate the entire canvas.

This simplicity and almost childlike feel to Kitamura’s drawings is what makes them strangely captivating.

“I find inspiration in everyday life, the simplicity of ordinary yet beautiful things that surround us,” Kitamura shares.

Kitamura, who has an art degree from Tokai University, has worked as a freelance illustrator since 2006. He has a significant following on social media, which includes over 70K followers on Instagram, while his works have been used in picture books, served as book and album covers, and graced the package of various products.
